La semana pasada vivimos uno de los fríos más intensos que se han registrado en años, y es llamado el Vórtice Polar. Las noticias reportaron que un 70% de los Estados Unidos estarían afectados. Las escuelas de muchos Estados estuvieron cerradas por 2 o hasta 3 días, y se registraron temperaturas de hasta -30 grados centígrados o más.

En Warrensburg Missouri que está en la parte media del país, sentimos temperaturas de -27 grados centígrados. Aunque los inviernos en la parte media, al Sur del país y al Este, siempre viene con nieve y temperaturas muy bajas, este invierno nos sorprendieron.

Para la gente en México es impensable vivir inviernos tan crudos. Creo que para la mayoría de los mexicanos que vivimos acá es difícil y no nos gusta el frio, pero no es tampoco tan difícil. Las casas que son de madera -y no de ladrillo como en México- tienen aislante entre las paredes, y se usan los sistemas de calefacción para mantener las casas a temperaturas de 20 grados centígrados o más.

Igualmente, en los meses de primavera y sobre todo el verano, si la temperatura afuera es de 35 a 40 grados centígrados, adentro de las casas el mismo sistema se convierte en aire acondicionado y mantiene la casa en un promedio de 20 grados o al gusto de cada familia. El problema sería si las familias no pueden pagar lo que mantiene estos sistemas trabajando.

La mayoría de las casas funcionan con electricidad y gas natural, el costo no es tan caro como en México. Tenemos compañías privadas que compiten entre sí con los precios. Es difícil calcular y decirles cuánto se paga porque depende si la casa tiene buen aislante. Por ejemplo, una casa mediana que solo funciona con electricidad no tiene gas natural, paga alrededor de 300 dólares al mes. Pero otra casa que tiene gas y electricidad paga 265 dólares al mes. Hay muchas variantes.

Al principio pensé que era una exageración, que ni hacia tanto frio, pero no pasaron ni 2 minutos cuando sentí dolor en la cara.
