El 14 de febrero es un día especial en muchas partes del mundo, celebramos la amistad y el amor de diferentes maneras, un día económicamente bueno para los comercios. Pero también un día devastador y triste para 17 familias del Estado de Florida; porque mientras nosotros compramos ositos de peluche para nuestros amados y amigos, ellos recuerdan la vida de sus hijos asesinados en su escuela en Parkland, Florida.

Este no ha sido el primero ni el último de los atentados en masa, pero si el que ha marcado un precedente e iniciado una lucha por parte de los padres de las victimas y sobrevivientes. Así nace la asociación March for Our Lives, (Marcha pornuestras vidas).

De acuerdo a los archivos de violencia con armas de fuego o Gun Violence Archive GVA por sus siglas en inglés, se considera un tiroteo en masa cuando 4 o más personas mueren no incluyendo al asesino. Otras asociaciones dicen que si las víctimas sobreviven se considera igual, tiroteo en masa. Tan solo en 2018 se contaron 218 tiroteos en el país, de los cuales la escuela de Parkland es considerada la 8ª más sangrienta de nuestra historia.

March for our lives junto con otros grupos, están pidiendo que se hagan leyes más estrictas para un mejor control de posesión de armas, ya que es muy fácil para cualquier persona obtener rifles de asalto automáticos. Incluso para jóvenes menores de 18 años. Pero después de muchas marchas a lo largo y ancho de los Estados Unidos, todavía nada pasa, los políticos y legisladores no han ni siquiera puesto una propuesta de ley en la mesa. La influencia política y económica de los fabricantes de armas es más poderosa que las víctimas de las masacres.

Personalmente es un tema que me toca muy de cerca, el año pasado tuvimos un incidente al final del año escolar, en la escuela secundaria cerca de mi trabajo y en donde mi hijo estudia, hubo dos intentos en lo que por suerte, la policía se dio cuenta que un estudiante estaba buscando a alguien que le ayudara a llevar al cabo las masacre e intervino a tiempo.

Trabajando de este lado del muro, me doy cuenta que una de las razones por la que las masacres son tan efectivas especialmente en las escuelas, es porque a diferencia de las escuelas en México que todo es al exterior, aquí los estudiantes esta encerrados.

Es decir, en México las escuelas tienen las aulas esparcidas y las puertas de cada una dan al exterior. No hay un número grande de muchachos juntos cuando almuerzan. En cambio, en las escuelas de los Estados Unidos, tal como se ve en las películas, todo esta entre paredes, como un hospital. Las separaciones de salones son los pasillos, y a la hora del almuerzo hay grupos de entre 100, 200 o más estudiantes juntos, blanco perfecto para un tiroteo. Además, para salir de la escuela hay que pasar por pasillos largos.

Aunque hay policías asignados que hacen rondines por las escuelas durante el día, y hacemos “simulacros de intrusos”, creo que ni los estudiantes ni los maestros estamos preparados para reaccionar en un momento dado, pero siempre está en nuestra mente la idea de la posibilidad de un ataque. Y como padres, nos aterra idea que pueda pasar en la escuela de nuestros hijos.

¡Cuántos factores se juntan en este tema! el problema de la salud mental, la facilidad para obtener rifles de asalto que pueden disparar hasta 600 balas por minuto, las leyes que permiten producción y venta de las mismas, el diseño de las escuelas y principalmente una sociedad que no admite que tenemos un problema en donde los padres no saben lo que sienten sus hijos.

No digo que los padres tienen la culpa de las malas decisiones que tomar los hijos (¿o si?), sino que a veces no sabemos como llenar los vacíos que llevan a los jóvenes a decidir tomar la vida de personas inocentes.

Hoy no compraré un oso de peluche, pero rezaré y apoyaré la causa de las familias que no podrán tener un feliz día de San Valentín…acá, de este lado del muro.
