Muchos nos preguntamos que hay después de la muerte, de acuerdo a nuestra cultura mexicana en algunas regiones pensamos que morimos tres veces, cuando el corazón deja de latir, en la ceremonia del entierro y por último, cuando olvidamos a las personas. Por eso es tan importante nuestra celebración del día de los muertos.

En Estados Unidos las tradiciones en torno a la muerte son distintas, sobre todo cuando un hijo muere. Yo no me puedo imaginar la vida después de perder a uno de mis hijos, pero desafortunadamente Joe Richardson lo sabe, y por este trágico evento en su vida han fundado al lado de su amigo Jeff Mozingo “The Awaken Project” que traducido al español sería El

proyecto Abre los Ojos o Despierta, para honrar la memoria de su hijo y evitar que tragedias así se repitan.

Ellos se dedican a dar platicas en las escuelas compartiendo su historia de una manera diferente, ya que no solo comparten su experiencia sino también sus talentos.

Hace unas semanas se presentaron en la escuela en donde trabajo, honestamente me fastidió mucho saber que perderíamos ¡casi dos horas de clase! en una platica para los estudiantes, pero con todo respeto debo decir que valió mucho la pena. Me di cuenta que muchos estudiantes se sintieron sumamente impactados, algunos de ellos incluyéndome salimos llorando o con el nudo en la garganta.

¿Quiénes son estos dos hombres y cuáles son sus historias? La conferencia empezó con Jeff Mozingo tocando la batería con una muy buena selección de música de los 80’s hasta música actual. Jeff es músico profesional y maestro de música, también tiene una tienda de instrumentos musicales en Saint Louis, Missouri.

Joe Richardson fue jugador de béisbol de las grandes ligas con los Boston Red Sox en la década de los 80s. En el 2012 su hijo murió por una sobredosis de heroína a la edad de 20 años, dejando no solo a sus padres y hermanos, también a su novia embarazada.

Este dolor hizo que Joe quisiera emprender el Awaken Project para educar y prevenir más muertes por el uso y abuso de las drogas. Jeff y Joe pusieron sus talentos y experiencia en un paquete y lo resumieron en una palabra, que es la que quieren enseñar a los jóvenes, CHOICE…ELECCION.

 

Ellos quieren que los jóvenes sepan que tienen la elección de decir no a las drogas, que a veces toma una vez hacer una mala elección que tendrá un impacto devastador no sólo en sus vidas, sino en las vidas de quienes los aman.

No hay duda que Estados Unidos está infestado de drogas, aunque ahora es un tema muy politizado. No importaría de dónde vienen las drogas si la demanda fuera menor. En mi opinión es un problema de salud mental, y de las regulaciones que el gobierno pone a las compañías farmacéuticas, entre otras.

Está comprobado que muchos jóvenes atletas empiezan a drogarse con pastillas para el dolor, pero la industria farmacéutica deja grandes ganancias al gobierno. De la misma manera que las compañías de bebidas energizantes y muy recientemente los Vapers o cigarros de electrónicos de vapor, en donde es completamente legal comprar líquidos para estos aparatos que se supone no tienen nicotina, pero también muy fácil comprar los que tienen sustancias con drogas, como mariguana que hasta vienen en paquetes comerciales por cierto muy parecidos a los de los dulces.

Estos “Vapers” o cigarros electrónicos no despiden olor, así que es muy fácil para los jóvenes usarlos incluso en los baños de las escuelas. Un reporte reciente mostró que más estudiantes de 1º. de secundaria están usando estos cigarros, que bien podrían ser la antesala para probar drogas más potentes.

No podemos esperar que el gobierno haga todo, pero sí que pusieran más dinero en las escuelas en general para mejorar la educación, programas de prevención y de rehabilitación que son muy caros para los padres, y que hagan regulaciones más estrictas. No sé si hay vida después de la muerte, pero si sé que muchos proyectos han nacido a la muerte de gente inocente; y en este caso creo que no solo hay vida como un legado que dejan los que parten antes de tiempo,  pero también hay esperanza de hacer un mundo mejor …de este lado del muro.

In my opinion it is a problem of mental health, and of the regulations that the government puts to the pharmaceutical companies, among others.

It is proven that many young athletes begin to drug themselves with pain pills, but the pharmaceutical industry leaves big profits to the government. In the same way that energizing beverage companies and very recently Vapers or electronic steam cigars, where it is completely legal to buy liquids for these appliances that are not supposed to have nicotine, but also very easy to buy those that have substances with drugs, like marijuana that even come in commercial packages by the way very similar to those of candy wrapers.

These “Vapers” or electronic cigars do not fire odor, so it is very easy for young people to use them even in the school restrooms. A recent report showed more students in 7th. grade are using these cigars, which might well be the anteroom for testing more potent drugs.
